OFFICIAL MEDIA STATEMENT
Former Australian Asian Senator Mourned
Mr Tsebin Tchen, Australia’s first overseas-born Asian Senator, has passed away unexpectedly. Mr Tchen served as a Liberal Senator for Victoria from 1999 to 2005. Highly respected and popular on both sides of Parliament, Mr Tchen was known as a pioneer, then elder statesman of Australia’s multicultural and Asian community for decades.
After his retirement from Federal Parliament Mr Tchen remained a strong advocate for multiculturalism, serving as a commissioner of the Victorian Multicultural Commission in the state of Victoria and as a member of the ministerially appointed Australian Multicultural Council. He was also made an adjunct professor at Swinburne University of Technology through his deep interest in Australian Chinese history.
Mr Tchen leaves behind wife Pauline, daughter Jacinta, son Adrian and Yan.
A public memorial is planned for Wednesday, 18 December at the Melbourne Town Hall.
In lieu of floral tributes and traditional messages of condolences at the memorial, Mr Tchen’s family has advised they will be establishing a Foundation in his honour.
They convey their deep gratitude for the outpouring of affection and respect from the Chinese Australian community and wider community in general and respectfully request privacy during this difficult time.
